Airsoft: A Journey Through History

Exploring history often reveals how past events have shaped the future, and that’s particularly true for Airsoft. This immersive sport has a rich heritage influenced by its evolution over time.

But, where did Airsoft originate?

If you’ve already skimmed the internet, you might have seen that Airsoft was created by a man named Ichiro Nagata, and while that’s somewhat accurate, the story is a bit more complicated.

So if you’re here to uncover the true origins of Airsoft, you’ve found the right place

Ancient Origins (250 BC)

The story of Airsoft began in ancient times when Ktesibios of Alexandria, Egypt, developed principles that laid the groundwork for air-powered weapons. Although there is no evidence to suggest these weapons were built, Ktesibios is credited with inventing the first known air pump, known as the “force pump,” around the 3rd century BCE.

His work contributed significantly to the understanding of compressed air and its potential applications. This early innovation by Ktesibios paved the way for later developments in technology, which eventually led to the creation of air-powered weapons centuries later.

Early Innovations (1600s-1800s)

Airsoft Early Innovations
Now many years later, in the 1500s a man named Hans Lobsinger in Germany created the first working prototype of an air gun. These airguns shot spherical lead balls using compressed air and were quite popular in hunting and sports for their silence and efficiency.

However, the Air gun started to gain more popularity in the 1700s when the Girandoni Air Rifle hit the scene. These guns were revolutionary because they looked like muskets but were air guns with an air tank not too dissimilar to the setup we see in Airsoft today. This gun could allow a shooter to fire 20 – 30 shots per minute in comparison to the muskets during the 1700s which could only shoot 3 to 4 shots per minute.

This technological leap was so impressive that the Austrian military adopted the air rifle for service. However, the guns were eventually phased out due to high maintenance requirements and the complexity of fielding them in large quantities.

The BB Gun Era (1882-1940)

The Airsoft journey truly took off in 1882 with a man named Clarence Hamilton who was a watchmaker who created an all-metal spring-powered air rifle.

Although air rifles such as the Girandoni existed 100 before this, what makes Clarence Hamilton’s innovation so special is that he showed his gun to a friend who upon shooting the rifle said ‘Woah, that’s a Daisy’.

Long story short the Daisy company was born.

The company has managed to develop hundreds of air rifles, but their flagship design, the Red Ryder BB Gun was their most iconic model, which was released in March 1940.

Now what makes this gun so special is the marketing behind it. The gun was named after the main character in a popular Western comic called Red Ryder.

Daisy saw an opportunity to capitalize on the popularity of the Red Ryder character and the Western genre. By naming their BB gun after the well-known and beloved character, they aimed to attract young fans of the comic book and appeal to their sense of adventure and heroism associated with Red Ryder.

Emergence of Airsoft (1945 - 1980)

The year 1945 marked the end of WW2 after the bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Two important outcomes happen at this moment.

One – America occupies Japan (we’ll come back to this later).

Two – All the American troops come home and nine months later we have the Baby Boom.

With baby’s now in full swing, toys were in high demand. Two men who decided to capitalize on this were Harold Matson and Elliott Handler who supplied this demand with the company Mattel Toys, founded in 1945. The company is responsible for making Barbie, Hot Wheels and cap guns. Cap guns were very popular in the 40s, 50s, and ’60s, which had a realistic metal construction and loud popping action, often firing small plastic projectiles.

The cap guns at the time were very poor in terms of accuracy, however the realism couldn’t be beaten. One particular cap gun, the Dick Tracy Snub Nose 57 Jell Cap Shooter was marketed as a must-have for anyone reading the most popular comic book at the time, Dick Tracy.

Although this particular gun isn’t an airsoft gun it inspired the very first airsoft gun, the Rayline Zebra II Pellet Pistol.

Instead of using an air piston, this gun used a spring, which limited its range. However, it was the first gun to use six millimeters of plastic bb’s.

Meanwhile in Japan, after the aftermath of WWII, they had to turn into a trade nation. As a consequence, all their guns and swords were taken away, initiating new laws that limited the use of weapons.

This frustrated many gun enthusiasts in Japan, who then turned to toys, where they found cap guns. It was the only legal way for the Japanese to get the firearm experience. This was the moment when the company MGC was founded which produced the country’s first cap gun model, the Walter VP2, that shot metal BBs.

The gun became a hit and the popularity of cap guns exploded in Japan. However, in 1971 the Japanese government started imposing strict laws on cap guns that shot metal BB’s so companies had to start adapting.

This is the moment Ichiro Nagata comes into the picture. He decided to create model guns that wouldn’t hurt people and called these types of guns ‘soft airguns’. The first of his inventions was the JAC Battle Master, which included a silicone gas tube that resulted in a lower muzzle velocity. This gun fell well within Japanese regulations.

Compared to the cap guns, these guns shot with superior accuracy and greater range and cost $300 at the time.

Whilst the JAC Battle Master started to gain popularity, America released a magazine called ‘combat magazine’ which was published in Japan. The magazine included details about a sport people were playing in America called Survival Games.

The Japanese gun enthusiasts became inspired by this and it wasn’t long before they started using their soft airguns to create survival games of their own, which they would call Subaiburu Gemu.

Tokyo Marui and the Rise of Airsoft (1980s-2000s)

With the booming popularity of airsoft in Japan, guns started to become more expensive. There became a need in the market for a cheap and reliable airsoft gun. In stepped Tokyo Marui who produced their very own airsoft pistol, the Ruger PO8. Although this gun wasn’t as powerful as other airsoft guns, its $15 price tag was too good to turn down.

By 1990, airsoft evolved from casual shooting to organized games and events. In 1991, Tokyo Marui revolutionized airsoft with the FAMAS F1, the first electric airsoft gun.

This gun lowered the cost of average airsoft guns by eliminating the need for gas, appealing to those seeking a cheaper option.

By the turn of the century, airsoft expanded globally, with organized games as well as military training that incorporated airsoft guns.

Tokyo Marui and the Rise of Airsoft (1980s-2000s)

Between 2009 – and 2010 airsoft experienced its biggest boom. This was heavily influenced by video games such as Call of Duty and Modern Warfare.

YouTube also started to gain immense popularity and became an avenue for people to watch entertaining airsoft content. These videos were gaining millions of views, which encouraged many to start playing airsoft themselves.

Airsoft guns and events became widely accessible, making it easy for people to experience the thrill of combat.

The Present

Today, airsoft has now become a well-established sport that has a global community. The culture surrounding airsoft involves a shared appreciation for realism, with players investing in authentic gear, uniforms, and accessories to enhance their immersive experience on the battlefield.

Players often form tight-knit teams, participating in large-scale events and milsim (military simulation) operations that can span entire weekends. These events often replicate real-world military scenarios, complete with objectives, strategies, and even role-playing elements.

Many “Zoomer” gun YouTubers like Administrative Results and Garand Thumb are making it big due to this trend. The same creators are also talking about Airsoft and pushing people to the sport.

Airsoft is seeing absurd growth, and this trajectory will continue to rise. With its blend of realism, camaraderie, and evolving content, airsoft is poised for a bright future. Whether you’re a seasoned player or new to the game, there’s never been a better time to get involved in this exciting and dynamic sport.
